2014 Internships & Working Memberships

Internships for 2014-No longer accepting applications

Due to returning staff we are not currently hiring interns for the 2014 season.

We are no longer accepting applications for internships for the 2014 growing season here at Native Hill! These positions are for folks that have always wondered what it would be like to run a small scale agricultural operation as an economically viable enterprise. These are entry level positions geared towards gaining experience with growing food from seed to sale in the Northern Colorado climate. As an intern on the farm, not only will you be exposed to all aspects of vegetable production but you will also gain insight as to the inner workings of a family run, diversified vegetable operation. Although you will work very hard, sometimes for long hours, we hope that our interns will complete the season with an idea of what it takes to run a market farm, a firm knowledge base from which to continue on their agricultural path, and a deep satisfaction for the work they have accomplished.

All positions start April 1st and run through Nov 15th.

Experience in the following areas will be gained:

Field work: harvesting, transplanting, weeding, pruning, trellising, thinning, managing irrigation systems, pest control, and other tasks
Pack-out operations: washing and sorting harvested crops, quality control, and packing/storage requirements of all crops
Greenhouse operations: seeding, potting-up, irrigation, pest control, fertility, as well as other tasks
Marketing and Sales operations: working with the CSA, Farmers market, and wholesale accounts
Season extension: Planting plans, structure management.

Full Time Position- We have one opening for a full time intern for 2013. We are looking for an intrinsically motivated person who would like to fully immerse themselves in life on the farm. Work loads will very between 40 and 50 hours per week and at times, hours may not be regular. Strong management skills and physical labor experience are a plus.

Benefits for our full time position include:

On farm housing:  Private bedroom and office with shared full kitchen and 1 1/2 bath
Monthly Stipend that varies depending on experience
Farm Produce and other provisions that are often bartered for between farms (eggs, milk, bread)
Consulting for one year post internship
Possible end of season bonus
Part Time Position- We have two openings for part-time intern positions for 2013. We are looking for folks who are interested in a part time position on the farm with work loads varying between 20 and 25 hours per week. A strong desire to learn and physical labor experience are a plus.

Benefits for our part time positions include:

Monthly stipend that varied depending on experience
Farm Produce and other provisions that are often bartered for between farms (eggs, milk, bread)
Possible end of season bonus
Hours that will allow for off farm employment

Other benefits incurred by choosing to intern at Native Hill include our location to Fort Collins and to mountain activities. We boast a fabulous culture of bikes and beer and for good reason. The farm is located just 1 mile from the nearest bike path and from there it is only a 10-15 minute ride into town. Fort Collins is the self proclaimed microbrewery capital of the U.S.  If you can’t find a preferred locally brewed beverage here, you probably don’t like beer. The farm is located 15 minutes from the mouth of the Poudre canyon which has world class boating, excellent hiking trails, and great sport and trad climbing.  It is also within a 10 minute drive to both State, County, and City run parks that offer great bouldering, mountain biking, and trail running. Just make sure you bring your sunscreen and your wide-brimmed hat as we have over 300 days of sunshine here!

Working Memberships 2014 are full
Native Hill is not accepting applications for working memberships for the 2014 season! Please read the description and requirements below to learn more about our working memberships. Interested persons can fill out the application below and email or snail mail it back to the farm at your earliest convenience.
Why become a working member at Native Hill?

Most of our working members are internally motivated folks who are looking for a deeper connection with their food, farmers, and community. They like to work hard, get dirty, feel as though they are part of a team, and meet other working members that share common interests and values. Oh, and of course, they love veggies and enjoy working for their share in the season’s bounty. Working members work hard but have a ton of fun and usually return back for many seasons to come!

The Program:

The working member program exists in order to get a large amount of work done in a concentrated amount of time. Almost all shifts revolve around harvest days and although there may be instances in which we will be doing something that is not harvesting, the vast majority of a working member’s time spent on the farm will be getting food out of the field and ready for market or wholesale orders. Because of the static nature of our markets, our working members must be available for one of the designated shifts (ie, we will only accept applicants that fit into our availability). We depend on our working members to get harvest work done and because we are compensating them for their time, we not only consider them an integral part of the farm team, but also employees. This is NOT a volunteer position; hence we can’t stress enough that we are looking for committed individuals to join our team. Working members commit to a REGULAR, 3 hour shift for the entirety of our market season. In exchange for their work, they receive $10 per hour worked in produce from out market stand. In addition, all working members must be available 3 Saturdays out of the market season to help at our market stand.

Requirements:

– Must be able to commit to 20 of the 24 weeks of our market season

– Must be available for the entire duration (3 hours) of one of our designated working member shifts

– Must be able to commit to 3 Saturday market shifts during the 24 week season

– Must be in good physical condition and enjoy working outdoors in all types of weather

– Be on time and ready to work when you get to the farm
